General Surgery

General surgery focuses on treating diseases and conditions related to the abdominal area and digestive system. These procedures are typically performed using laparoscopic techniques. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical method that uses small incisions as entry points for a camera and specialized tools. This approach reduces the risk of infections, complications, and scarring. Moreover, laparoscopic surgeries tend to have faster recovery times compared to traditional “open” surgeries.

General Surgery Treatments

Gallbladder Removal

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ located beneath the liver. It stores bile produced by the liver, which aids in digestion. When the gallbladder becomes diseased, it may need to be removed through a procedure known as a cholecystectomy. This surgery is considered low-risk, and most patients can go home the same day.

During the surgery, several small incisions are made, and a tiny camera along with surgical instruments are inserted to remove the gallbladder. Some surgeons may choose to perform an open cholecystectomy, which involves a larger incision.

Gallbladder removal helps alleviate issues caused by gallstones, inflammation, polyps, and other conditions. Since the gallbladder isn’t essential for digestion, post-surgery digestive problems are rare.

Hernia Repair

Inguinal hernia surgery addresses issues where tissues, such as the intestine, push through the abdominal wall. The surgery helps heal the wall, realign digestive organs, and relieve pain and discomfort.

The surgeon creates small incisions, inflates the abdomen with air for visibility, and places a mesh around the hole to reinforce the area. Most patients can return home the same day and resume normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks.

Abscess Drainage

An abscess is a pus-filled growth that forms on the skin. When antibiotics aren’t effective, surgical drainage may be necessary. The surgeon makes a small incision to relieve pressure, drains the pus, and treats the abscess cavity. This procedure is quick and typically painless.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy allows the surgeon to examine the lining of the colon and rectum for issues such as cancer, polyps, or other diseases. A flexible tube is inserted through the anus to screen for abnormalities. If necessary, a biopsy can be performed, and any benign polyps can be removed during the procedure.

Wart Removal

Wart removal surgery uses lasers to destroy the tissue causing the wart. The procedure, which is usually performed under local or general anesthesia, involves burning away the wart tissue. Recovery time depends on the size and location of the wart. Laser surgery is typically recommended when other treatments have failed.

Hemorrhoidectomy

Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgery to remove or shrink hemorrhoids, typically performed when lifestyle changes and medications don’t provide relief. Using a laser, the surgeon removes the hemorrhoids. This procedure is safe and effective, and patients are encouraged to follow a high-fiber diet to prevent future flare-ups.

Sphincterotomy

Sphincterotomy is performed to treat issues with the anal sphincter, often due to anal fissures. The surgeon makes an incision in the sphincter to alleviate tension and improve bowel control. The surgery is quick, and patients typically recover the same day.

Fistulotomy

A fistulotomy is performed to treat an anal fistula—a small tunnel between the anus and the skin. The surgeon makes an incision to open and drain the fistula, allowing it to heal. Recovery usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.

Pilonidal Excision

Pilonidal excision is a procedure that removes cysts from the buttock area. The surgeon creates an incision to remove the cyst and surrounding tissue. Healing can take 2 to 4 weeks, depending on whether stitches are used or the wound is left open. The procedure is typically done on the same day, and most patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks.
