Urology

Urologic surgery deals with procedures of the male reproductive system and male and female urinary tracts. The procedures are performed on and around the pelvis and focus on treatment of inflammatory diseases, malignancies, obstructions, and dysfunction.

Urologic Surgery Treatments

Biopsies and Cancer Screening

One of the best ways to fight common cancers like prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer is to get screened early and often. While not every person gets cancer, the disease is prevalent. The good news is that many cancers are now easier to treat than ever before. The best way to treat a cancer is to catch it as early as possible.

At the Beverly Century Surgery Center, we offer cancer screening, treatment plans, and aftercare. This alleviates your stress and gives you plenty of treatment options in a warm and caring environment. We offer advanced cancer screening and treatment techniques using state-of-the-art equipment to better identify, diagnose, and treat various cancers.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment helps men who experience an inability to develop or maintain an erection. This condition affects millions of American men. For many, the condition causes deep feelings of distress and embarrassment.

Laparoscopic erectile dysfunction treatment uses a tiny camera and specialized tools to release pressure on the pudendal nerve and artery. The goal is to significantly improve the rate of erections and hardness on the erection hardness score (EHS) following ED surgery. ED treatment by a urologic surgeon can provide help with ED, leading to improved sexual outcomes and a healthy boost of self-esteem.

Circumcision

Circumcision is a urological surgery that involves the removal of the foreskin, which is the tissue that exists at the penis tip. Circumcision is commonly performed on male newborns at the hospital. The procedure is also used on older uncircumcised men later in life. Older men visiting their urologist for adult circumcision do so because it becomes a medical necessity. Benefits of circumcision include a lowered risk of infection, reduced pain due to foreskin scarring (phimosis), and to make urination easier.

Adult circumcision surgery uses local or general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. During the procedure, your surgeon frees the foreskin from the glans (penis head) before clipping off the excess tissue. The procedure takes around an hour to complete and recovery takes around two weeks. Men who undergo circumcision surgery have reduced risk of urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, penile cancer, and glans inflammation.

Incontinence Surgery

Losing your ability to control the flow of urine can be distressing. Urinary incontinence, the involuntary release of urine from the bladder, is the inevitable result. Urologic surgery can correct this problem with various techniques depending on the source of the problem. Urinary incontinence can be caused by a weak pelvic wall, muscles around the bladder that spasm involuntarily, and an overactive bladder.

Surgical treatment for incontinence surgery involves sling procedures and bladder neck suspension procedures, which are prosthetic devices used to offer further support for the internal organs. These surgeries, once completed, can successfully alleviate your incontinence problem.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is what is commonly known as an enlarged prostate. As men advance in age, the prostate gland can enlarge, causing uncomfortable symptoms affecting the urinary tract, bladder, and kidneys. The urinary system is most often affected, as the swollen prostate can prevent the flow of urine. The problem tends to affect men over the age of twenty as the prostate grows larger and begins squeezing down on the urethra. Over time, this causes the man to lose the ability to empty the bladder completely.

Rezum Therapy for BPH is an effective treatment that uses water vapor therapy to reduce the size of the prostate and alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Rezum for BPH requires no anesthesia, relieves BPH symptoms, and the effects can be felt in as little as two weeks following this next level urology treatment.

Penile Implants

A penile implant is a medical device that is surgically implanted into the penis to treat symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED). A penile implant is normally employed after natural or alternative methods of treating ED have failed.

There are two types of penile implants: inflatable and malleable.

Malleable penile implants are bendable prosthetic devices that consist of a pair of malleable rods. The rods are surgically implanted within the erection chamber of the penis shaft. Malleable implants need to be adjusted into the erect position when initiating sexual activity.

Inflatable implants consist of two- and three-piece devices. Two-piece inflatable penile implants lay flat naturally. Using a pump device hidden within the scrotum, you and your partner will pump the implant at the time of sexual activity.

Three piece or multicomponent penile implants feel like a natural erection. The implant expands with length and girth and tends to feel firmer and fuller when compared to other implant types. While both the two-piece and three-piece implants are concealed within the body, the three-piece implant has a reservoir hidden in the abdomen. Fluid kept in the reservoir is responsible for inflating the multi-component penile implant at the time of sexual activity.

Penile implant surgery takes around 60 to 90 minutes and recovery takes around six weeks. The treatment can be effective for ED when other traditional treatments have failed.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are tiny crystals that can develop in the kidney and urethra, sometimes simultaneously. An incredibly common condition, kidney stones tend to run in families with infants being particularly susceptible. Kidney stones form when your urine concentrates to form small crystals that eventually become kidney stones.

There are several different types of kidney stones, including calcium stones, struvite stones, cystine stones, and uric stones. Calcium stones are the most common and typically occur in twenty-something men. Women with urinary tract infections tend to form struvite stones. Cystine stones form in people with a genetic disorder called cystinuria, and uric acid stones are commonly found in both men and women undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from gout.

You might be a good candidate for kidney stone treatment if you experience abdominal or back soreness, bloody urine, discolored urine, chills, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

We have a wide range of resources at our disposal to diagnose and treat your kidney condition, such as abdominal CT scans and MRIs, blood tests, and kidney function tests, to name a few.

While some kidney stones will pass on their own, others are too large to pass naturally through the urethra, which could lead to urine blockage or kidney damage. Kidney stones can also cause moderate to severe and persistent pain.

Kidney stone surgery is the minimally invasive way to remove large kidney stones to treat the source of the problem and the pain. If the cause is not found and treated, your doctor can then give you optimal health advice or treatment for avoiding kidney stones in the future.

We also perform bladder surgery, prostatic surgery, uterine surgery, pelvic lymph node dissection, and robotic prostatectomies/nephrectomies.
