What is Pain Management Used For?
Pain management treatment can help with intermittent and chronic pain. You might be a good candidate for one of these procedures if you experience one or more of the following conditions.
- Back Pain: 80% of adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. Alleviating your back pain with an epidural injection can make life easier.
- Arthritis: Arthritis is the leading cause of disability worldwide. When exercise, stress reduction, and medication have failed, a pain management procedure can help.
- Chronic headaches: Persistent headaches can make life unbearable. Get your life back by scheduling an appointment for pain management at the Beverly Century Surgical Center in Beverly Hills.
- Vulvodynia: Pain around the opening of the vagina can be alleviated with a strategic pain management injection.
- Fibromyalgia: Sufferers of fibromyalgia experience fatigue, tenderness at various points on the body, and musculoskeletal pain. Pain management care can keep fibromyalgia flare-ups from inhibiting your life.
- Peripheral Nerve Damage: Otherwise referred to as peripheral neuropathy, Dr. Babak Moeinolmolki can provide you with a diagnosis and treatment to alleviate chronic nerve pain.
Types of Pain Management Care
The method of pain management care you receive will depend on the location of the discomfort and how badly it hurts.
Epidural Injections
An epidural injection or epidural steroid injection is a medical technique that uses a combination of corticosteroids and local anesthetic. These substances are injected into the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord to treat chronic pain.
There are two types of epidural injection: Cervical and Lumbar.
Cervical Lumbar Injection
A cervical epidural steroid injection (CESI) can be used to relieve pain felt in the neck, arms, and back. For back pain, CESI is effective for treating herniated discs and spinal stenosis. This pain management treatment can even be used for chronic regional pain syndrome, daily headaches, and other chronic pain conditions.
CESI works by alleviating inflammation that occurs around the spinal nerve roots. The condition typically causes sharp pain around the neck and feels like pins and needles when felt along the arms. By reducing the nerve root inflammation, the pain tends to disappear.
Lumbar Epidural Injection
The lumbar spine is a series of five vertebrae in your lower back. The lumbar is responsible for supporting much of your weight and is prone to injury, which can cause chronic pain.
Injury or sprains can lead to lumbar pain that spreads to the upper and lower legs. Other causes of lumbar pain include nerve irritation, bone/joint conditions, and arthritis.
Lumbar spinal pain can flare-up with every movement you make, which can negatively affect your quality of life. An epidural steroid injection can treat this pain to give you fast relief.
Piriformis Muscle Injection
Piriformis muscle pain is represented by persisting pain in the thighs, buttocks, legs, and lower back. This type of pain occurs when the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve. The pain typically originates in the buttocks, upper thighs, and the sides of the lower legs. The causes of this condition aren’t fully known, but sufferers tend to be athletes and individuals who have had injuries near the piriformis muscle.
A piriformis muscle injection can provide temporary relief by stopping the muscle from spasming. You may not feel the full effects of the procedure for three to seven days, but the overall results can alleviate pain for many months or years.
Nerve Root Block
A selective nerve root block is a procedure that is both diagnostic and therapeutic in nature. By using the technique, your doctor can view your spinal column in real-time. The ability to see your spine, nerves, and connective tissues lets your doctor accurately diagnose your pain issue for the purposes of customizing your pain management treatment plan.
When you have become affected by chronic pain, your doctor will use the nerve root block technique to identify the group of nerves responsible for emitting pain signals to the area of inflammation.
A needle is then used to inject anesthetic and steroids into the surrounding area to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. This technique provides instant pain relief. The procedure takes around an hour to complete and the patient is usually sent home the same day.
