Surgical Biopsies and Removal of Abnormal Skin Growths
The surgical biopsies and removal of lumps and bumps refers to excision of common skin growths like moles, warts, and epidermal cysts. These simple procedures are performed under local anesthetic, which means you will be awake for the procedure. For larger lesions, your surgeon may opt to use general anesthetic, whereby you will be advised to have someone assist you for up to 24 hours following your procedure. Surgical biopsies are employed when a growth exhibits cancerous behavior, whereby the growth tissue will be sent to a lab for further analysis.
Common Skin Growths That Require Removal
Lipomas: These fatty tumors are typically benign and composed entirely of fat cells.
Pilar Cysts: These fluid-filled skin growths originate from hair roots and grow on the scalp.
Sebaceous Cysts: These irregular skin growths commonly form on the back and neck. They develop when the sebaceous glands of the skin become blocked. The cysts tend to be round and firm to the touch with occasional drainage.
Some lumps and bumps don’t fit into a normal category. At the Beverly Century Surgery Center, we can excise those too.
While many people choose to have their lumps and bumps removed for aesthetic reasons, there are more serious purposes for growth removal surgery.
Even benign (noncancerous) growths on the skin can lead to itching and bleeding. Painful and abnormal skin growths can catch on clothing and prevent thorough hair brushing when occurring on the scalp.
In cases where growths show cancerous signs, your doctor will perform an excision biopsy, which is the cutting away of tissue for the purposes of lab sampling.
What to Expect with Lumps and Bumps Surgery
The surgery for removing the lumps and bumps involves fast techniques that are relatively free of discomfort.
The growths or lesions are removed with a simple excision. This procedure does tend to produce a small scar. The ease of recovery depends on the type of anesthesia you received. With local anesthesia, you should be back to your usual routine within 24 hours. General anesthesia used for more complex lesion surgeries may require a longer duration, such as three weeks post-surgery, before resuming your typical routine.
Once the lumps and bumps are removed, the wound is then closed with stitches. Some stitches dissolve on their own while others require a follow-up appointment for their removal.
